23rd Ave construction update: No work at E Cherry intersection this weekend; E Jefferson closure next weekend

Upcoming E Cherry Street intersection closures postponed until further notice
The E Cherry Street and 23rd Avenue intersection closures planned for Aug. 14-17 and 21-24--this weekend and next--have been postponed due to a shift in the construction schedule. Additional work at the intersection will be rescheduled for a later date. Please stay tuned for details. There will be no work this weekend!
Full intersection closure at E Jefferson Street and 23rd Avenue Aug. 21-24
Next weekend, crews plan to conduct demolition and paving work at the intersection of E Jefferson Street and 23rd Avenue. The intersection will be fully closed to traffic from 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, through 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24.

Neighbors can expect detours, general construction noise, dust and vibration throughout all hours of the weekend. We will share a flyer with more details about the work at E Jefferson Street, including a map of the detour routes and information about temporary water service interruptions, in our email update next week.

Ezell’s Famous Chicken at E Jefferson Street and 23rd Avenue will be open during this work, so please continue showing them your support during construction! Customers can continue to access all area businesses by car, by driving into the local access areas, or on foot.

Please note that demolition and paving work is dependent on weather and the completion of preliminary water main connections. In the event that the work is cancelled, it will be rescheduled for a future date.
Upcoming construction activities
  • Early utility work to replace the water main under the street between E Cherry Street and E Spring Street is underway; work will continue north in the coming weeks. During this work, drivers can still travel both north and south on 23rd Avenue, though travel will be reduced to one lane in each direction. You can view the construction notice about this work for more information.
  • Paving activities, including intermittent night work, will occur on 23rd Avenue from S Jackson Street to E Yesler Way over the next few weeks. Most work will take place during the day, however periodic night work to complete green saw cutting could occur between 9 PM and 2 AM. View the flyer about this work for more information.
  • Dates have not been confirmed for future intersection work at S Jackson Street or E Yesler Way. Please stay tuned for details.
