23rd Ave construction update: Jefferson closure this weekend

Full intersection closure at E Jefferson Street this weekend
Just a reminder that starting at 7 p.m. this Friday, Aug. 21, the E Jefferson Street and 23rd Avenue intersection will be closed for crews to conduct demolition and paving work. The intersection will reopen no later than 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 24.

Neighbors can expect detours, general construction noise, dust and vibration throughout all hours of the weekend. For more details about the work, including a map of the detour routes and information about temporary water service interruptions, please read theconstruction notice.

Please remember that local businesses are open and accessible during construction!
  • To reach Ezell’s Famous Chicken, take E Jefferson Street heading east or enter the local access area heading south on 23rd Avenue from E Cherry Street to E James Street, turn left on 22nd Avenue, then turn left on E Jefferson Street.
  • To get to the Arco station and AMPM at E Cherry Street/23rd Avenue, you can enter at any of the business driveways: off of E Cherry Street or by entering the local access zone on 23rd Avenue.
Demolition and paving work work is dependent on weather and the completion of other preparatory utility work. In the event that the work is cancelled, it will be rescheduled for a future date.
Upcoming construction activities
  • Early utility work north of E Cherry Street continues as crews replace the water main under the street. Over the coming weeks, work will progress north from E Cherry Street to E Union Street, so expect traffic revisions and temporary side street closures. During this work, drivers can still travel both north and south on 23rd Avenue, though travel will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Check out the updated construction notice for more information about this work.
  • Paving activities, including intermittent night work, will occur on 23rd Avenue from S Jackson Street to E Yesler Way over the next few weeks. Most work will take place during the day, however periodic night work to complete green saw cutting could occur between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. View the flyer about this work for more information.
  • Dates have not been confirmed for future weekend work at the E Cherry Street, E Yesler Way, and S Jackson Street intersections. Please stay tuned for details.
