23rd Ave construction update: Union closed this weekend, sidewalk work, October work preview

First closure at E Union St intersection this weekend
Beginning 7 PM this Friday, September 25, crews will close the E Union St and 23rd Ave intersection to begin replacing the water main underneath the street. The intersection will reopen by 6 AM on Monday, September 28.
  • Neighbors can expect detours, continuous work, noise, dust, and vibration throughout all hours of the weekend
  • Please follow the signed detours and avoid cutting through neighborhood streets
  • Residents and customers can drive into areas marked for local access to reach homes and businesses near the intersection
  • Businesses along E Union St and 23rd Ave will be open for business throughout this work
  • Please call our hotline at 206-727-8857 if you have questions
As a reminder, crews will need to close this intersection 1 to 2 additional weekends over the next several weeks to complete the water main connection. We’ll share an updated schedule for the future weekend intersection closures through email updates and our website each week. Please check back for the latest information.

Check out the construction notice for more details, including a map of the detour routes and information about temporary water service interruptions.
Sidewalk work from S Jackson St to E Yesler Way
Construction crews are working to demolish and repave sidewalks from S Jackson St to E Yesler Way on the east and west sides of 23rd Ave. Please use caution and pay attention to sidewalk closures and pedestrian detours.
Upcoming E James St intersection closure
Crews will close the E James St and 23rd Ave intersection in early October to work on the storm drain. This closure is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of October 2, but may be shifted depending on the schedule for E Union St intersection work. We’ll share a confirmed date and more information about the closure early next week.
Water main work to continue north of E Union St next month
Around mid-October, crews will wrap up their early work on the water main between E Cherry and E Union streets and will continue their work north of E Union St. As with thecurrent work in Zone B, there will be traffic revisions and temporary side street closures associated with this work. Drivers will still be able to travel both north and south on 23rd Ave, though travel will be reduced to one lane in each direction. We will provide more detailed information as the work gets closer.
Upcoming construction activities
  • The intersection of E Yesler Way and 23rd Ave will be partially closed to through traffic on weekdays through September 25. Southbound travel will be maintained, but east- and westbound traffic will be detoured. See the construction notice about this work for more information
  • Dates have not been confirmed for future weekend work at the S Jackson St intersection. Please stay tuned for details
